Appearance

Leif is a tall male Viera, presumably of the Rava clan, with vibrant green eyes, an earthy skintone, and wild, snowy hair. His facial features are both strong and soft, riding the fine line of beautiful masculinity, while his shoulders and chest are both broad and strong, and his waist narrow. When given the opportunity, he likes to add bursts of color to his outfits, usually in the form of bandanas and sashes. Red is his chosen accent color, and sometimes he'll add red feathers to his hair. This may be in reference to the surname he was given which he takes to mean "Apple".

Assessment

Personality

Leif is a shy, but incessantly warm creature. He won't be the first to speak, but when he does, it will be with calm, practiced patience and a natural kindness. His voice is a gentle, comforting, and earthy baritone. He listens well and generally accepts everyone's viewpoint and way of life so long as it is, in his mind, good. Granted, this judgement has been clouded now and again by his empathy. When put into a stressful or aggressive situation, it becomes obvious that some of his more passive tendencies have been instilled with training. He is very difficult to goad. He will deescalate situations if it does not interfere with protocol, and end situations effectively and efficiently once he decides the best path.

Key Points

He's loyal

He will go out of his way for close companions and friends. The Amnis Company being a very small, tight-knit group that became more of a family to him than anyone else, he has a yearning for deeper connections. Anyone he develops a bond with he will go out of his way to help. If he has conflicting orders from his superiors, he will choose to benefit the one he is closest to first.

He's Good-aligned and seeks out others who are similar

Leif has his own idea of what is good and moral, and he admires the morality in others. He will find it difficult, if not impossible, to form friendships and intimate relationships with anyone who is outside of this alignment.

Pureblooded Garleans make him nervous

He struggles to maintain eye contact with Garleans, especially if they are his superiors. The real reason is hard for him to explain, but it seems to be some mix of fear, respect, and adoration all at once. The effect doesn't seem as severe once he's known the Garlean long enough.

History

Basic Training

After being conscripted, Leif was initially trained as an eques with an emphasis on conforming his skills in subterfuge and tracking to "Imperial standards". Aether skill assessments were largely negative, but quickly revealed that he could be spurred into a frenzied state after exposure to measured amounts of it. In this state, documentation claims his strength is multiplied and his ferocity becomes formidable, which led to experimentation in controlled environments to induce the state artificially with ceruleum. After passing basic training with high marks, Leif was assigned the surname Malum and transferred to supplemental training with the heavy infantry to make use of his natural and enhanced strength. Training was completed with multiple heavy armor models, walkers, and the gunlance.

The Amnis Company

At this time, a request for transfer to the Amnis Company was placed by Undacus cen Aequor, who was known for having an eye for talent amongst misfits in the Imperial army. His methods of coercion are undocumented, but he succeeded in recruiting Leif and continuing his training in special ops and all of the odd jobs Aequor liked to take. Many of them were rescue and retrieval missions, or missions that have since had large amounts of their files redacted.Through Aequor's connections and with his commendations, Leif was awarded the rank of bas so that he could serve as second in command in the company. It was a controversial choice.

The 42nd R&D Facility

After sustaining injuries on a contract job in Thavnair tracking down and securing stolen prototypes belonging to the 3rd Division R&D, Aequor seemingly had a change of heart and transferred the company back to Garlemald. There he took a contract with Marius nan Ferrum to act as security for the 42nd R&D Facility.Like most of the Amnis Company's files, the 42nd is well known for its ability to redact most information that leaves it. Much of Leif's record is included in such redactions, except for satisfactory service reports and a commendation for a rescue effort in which two of nan Ferrum's men were returned to the facility unharmed.

Private Contract Work

After Aequor's death, Leif took the reins of the Amnis Company and negotiated an end to his contract with nan Ferrum early to pursue a new assignment under the command of Adrestus sas Lexius. His work for (or with?) the Tribunus is ongoing, even after the fall of Garlemald.

The Flower Shop

After the fall of Garlemald, things have been...messy. Alignments and hierarchies have been in shambles, leaving Leif torn on where to go. For now, he seems to be continuing his private work while partnering with Aurix nan Otus to open a flower shop in Ishgard with the hopes of generating jobs and offering some stability to displaced imperialists.

Deployment

Roleplaying Hooks

He's mobile

Leif is currently deployed in Eorzea as an undercover agent working toward an unknown goal. He is most likely to be found in Ishgard, where he has opened a small flower shop with his significant other in the hopes they can create jobs to help their fellows recover from the recent disaster. His primary mode of transportation outside of Eorzea is in an airship owned by sas Lexius, giving him the mobility he requires for his own personal assignment.

He's woefully ignorant of Home

As far as Leif is concerned, the Empire saved his life when he was left sick and dying in Dalmasca's desert sands. He doesn't remember his home, his family, or much about himself at all. He sometimes feels the call of the Wood or hears the Green Word from the Shroud, but is unable to understand it and therefore is unsettled by it. Meeting other Viera, especially men, or anyone who knows anything of Dalmasca, is always an awkward experience for him.

He's an Imperial Loyalist

As much as he might agree that the Empire is not the pinnacle of morality, he remains loyal to it. He won't bring it up in casual conversation, but he won't deny it if he's outed. He will lend a hand to any Imperial operative he meets.

Relationships

Related PCs and NPCs

The Amnis Company

A privatized Imperial mercenary group. After his recruitment, Leif was quickly absorbed into the family-like culture of the Amnis, forming strong bonds with each of its members. He credits the company and its former leader with his success and good fortunes.

Undacus cen Aequor

Former special ops agent and leader of the Amnis Company. Undacus and Leif had a close working relationship and a few trysts, but given the Garlean's reputation for being a flirt and playboy, Leif was unaware that Undacus loved him until after his death. The revelation has left him with unresolved feelings that he hasn't come to terms with yet.

Sadmi aan Talal

An ex-Thavnairian slave, groomed to become an information specialist. Sadim likes things neat and orderly. Leif, meanwhile, likes to think his frequent intrusions into the man's room are not nearly as annoying as he makes them seem. He's has had a crush on Sadim for a long time, even after dedicating his heart to someone else, but it's likely to just remain at that. Especially now that Sadim is away from his post, traveling with Cyrillus lux Anastasius.

Shino(suke)

A grizzled war veteran and Lupin. Shino likes to talk even less than Leif and their conversations are often one-sided or just a series of hums and nods. Even still, Shino has been a loyal friend and mentor to Leif, always willing to lend an ear to his problems and maybe a grunt of approval or disapproval.Currently MIA after the fall.

The 42nd R&D Facility

The 42nd was not a joyful post for Leif. Most of his time was spent patrolling underground portions of the facility, which felt unnaturally cold, sterile, and unsettling. The walls often began to close in on him. The work was unappealing and certain employees were too hostile for his liking, but he did his job...no matter what it was.

Marius nan Ferrum

A brusque, powerful, brilliant, and commanding Garlean man who is the second born son of the noble House Ferrum. He runs the 42nd facility with an iron fist and Leif is utterly terrified of him. At first he thought the man was simply driven and cruel, an opinion that hasn't entirely changed yet, but he has found that there is a mysterious soft side to him. Maybe soft isn't the right word. Ferrum sometimes seems to actually care about his employees and want them to succeed, and Leif is curious to see how much of that is genuine, or a ruse to use them to further his own means.

Victor mal Argyris

A venomous, vindictive, vicious little man, Victor is as confrontational as he is somehow brilliant. As Marius' protégé and diamond in the rough, Victor is afforded many, many leniencies that others in the 42nd are not. So, the brash and ambitious young man exercises his freedoms to their fullest and often acts like a spoiled brat. He seems to have decided that Leif is personally out to get him, and so makes sure that every one of their encounters involves throwing insults and yelling at him to leave. Leif tries to avoid him at all costs and help keep Aurix out of the man's firing range as well.

Aurix nan Otus

A quiet and dutiful bio-engineer and aether researcher, he is Marius nan Ferrum's second in command at the 42nd and one of the greater minds in his employ. Unlike Marius, Aurix seems to have reservations about the way Marius conducts his research, but his loyalty is unquestionable. Like Leif, he is calm, soft spoken, and sympathetic, which was what first allowed the two of them to speak on friendly terms. Leif was quickly drawn to this man who seemed to be the only decent and good person inside the facility, seeking out his kindness often in the otherwise cold and cruel assignment. The two eventually became an item, stealing moments throughout the days to be together, both innocently, and not so much. However, current revelations about Undacus have Leif questioning his feelings, and the relationship is at a standstill while he figures himself out.

Others

The New Dawn

Tsuneaki Nagao - "Bladesmith"

A flirtatious Eastern bladesmith that Leif has worked with on occasion to decipher the origins of magicked weapons and assist with other missions. Tsuneaki has a strong and vibrant personality, which Leif finds a breath of fresh air. He's easy to talk to and even been a shoulder to cry on during hard times. With Leif's current assignment giving him longer access to Eorzea, he hopes to get to know the lordling Au Ra better.

Relexano Delmandi - "Dephius"

Dephius is a by-the-book Garlean, and that means he's exactly what Leif is accustomed to dealing with. He's strict, serious (even humorless), and always willing to use violence to solve a problem. Leif normally would not pursue personal vendettas against others, but Dephius was one of the first. The two had a proper duel, almost to the death, and they've been hard but fair with each other since.

Out of Character

The Roleplayer Behind the Character

Rule #1: IC =/= OOC. These should never mix.
I will not roleplay with pseudo OOC characters or self inserts.

About Me

I am primarily found on the Balmung server of FFXIV and reside within the Pacific time zone. I prefer dark and mature roleplay with a focus on character development and growth. I expect my partners to express a level of maturity capable of telling me their limits if they have them, or pausing any roleplay in a timely manner if they need to discuss something OOC that either bothers them or that they wish to work toward in the story. Let's have fun and make up some cool shit.

My Views on Lore

FFXIV allows for a lot of flexibility in how it presents its world and I am generally a lore strict roleplayer. That said, much of the Garlean lore presented in this carrd has been built over the years in personal roleplay (and most of it I credit to my very good friend and fellow FC lead Glyngaris). We use extended legions to avoid conflicts with the XIV available, and have added our own ranking officials. With these headcanons in mind, we never force our lore on others and happily weave in other player-character stories.

My Style and Preferences

I am a short para RPer, or a "mirror" RPer. I will not always fill the chat box and don't expect others to either. That said, grammar and punctuation are important to me, and anything in "quotations" in /say is IC. Because of the themes I enjoy, I ask for my RP partners to be 21+ and be comfortable with communication.

About Leif

Leif is a good-aligned character working for usually not good-aligned people. His views and actions will not always be representative of my own, but he is generally a very kind character that should form relationships easily with most other characters. He is one of my few strictly gay characters and is not looking to make a traditional family.

What I'm Looking to RP

Dark, mature, occult, character/story building, world building, lore enhancement, political intrigue, romance.

What I'm NOT Looking to RP

Generic adventure/mercenary work, baby roleplay.

Final Notes

I'm a little shocked that I have to say this, but I see it in the community a lot. Being a Garlean RPer does not make me or my friends nazis. If we find one who is, we'll help you report them to fucking hell and back. But in the end your trauma and your triggers are your responsibility if you choose to engage in RP with my characters knowing everything here. Help me respect your boundaries by being honest with me, because the last thing I want to do is to make someone uncomfortable while writing fantasy roleplay.
